DIY Solar

Do it yourself (DIY) Solar plants or How to install a Solar plant?

There are several videos and blogs available for DIYs on different topics like plumbing, car washing, car maintenance, chimney cleaning etc. So, people ask us-“If we can have Do it yourself (DIY) Solar plants too?”

The answer is – YES! , then they ask us -“How can we install our own Solar plant?”

Now, looking at the technical aspect, like every other field or topic, one can not have all the knowledge about all the subjects, we work on. However, there are some DIYs in every field, which we can perform without the in depth knowledge or technical know how. Now, to install a Solar plant you can first decide the total green energy you want to generate in the form of Solar power. Suppose, this comes out to 200 KWh (Electricity units) per month. Now, following the below given steps, you may calculate the total size of Solar plant to help you decide better-

  1. How much electricity can a 1KW Solar power plant generate in one month? A: The approximate generation of a one Kilo watt Solar power plant in a month is around 135 KWh/Electricity units, so for 200 KWh, you will require approx. 1.5KW Solar power plant, taking into consideration some conversion loses, DC loses etc.
  2. Once you get the size of the Solar plant, see that you have enough shadow free space on your rooftop, to accommodate a 1.5KWp Solar power plant.
  3. Q: How much (shadow free) space is required to install a 1KW Solar power plant? A: It’s around 100 sq. feet, so a 1.5KWp Solar power plant will require around 150 sq. feet shadow free rooftop space.
  4. Q: In which direction I should fix these solar panel into? A: For maximum output, they should be installed facing South direction, as the Sunrises from the East and moving through a tilt towards South direction, sets down in the west.
  5. Q: Which Solar inverter should I buy? A: It can be decided on the basis of your requirements, whether you need an off-grid Solar plant or a grid tied Solar plant.
  6. Q: What is the difference between Grid Tied and Off-Grid Solar plant? A: Solar in a dependent and variable source of energy, as the Solar radiations vary around 1,00,000(1 lakh) times a day, there must be a battery or grid as backup for the Solar plant, so where Grid is used as a backup, its called a Grid Tied Solar plant and where Batteries are used as a Back up, its called an off-grid Solar plant.
  7. Q: I should install a Grid Tied Solar Plant or Off-grid Solar plant? A: As shared earlier, if grid is available as a backup, then go for a Grid tied plant otherwise, you will need batteries to support your off-grid solar plant.
