Which battery to use with Solar Power plant?

We all know that a battery is a DC(Direct Current) appliance. Solar panels generate DC power, so when batteries are charged with DC directly, it enhances the life of the battery. However, the question here arises- “Which battery to use with Solar Power plant?” Let us solve this query for you.

When we decide to use Solar power with batteries, we know that we are talking about off-grid Solar power plant. If we are running any heavy/induction load with Solar power, we need batteries which can provide instant extra current at a predefined voltage, as Solar power is always variable. For E.g. we are running a water pump with our Solar power plant and suddenly the weather becomes cloudy, the whole load comes on the batteries. This is the reason, we used C10 capacity Lead Acid batteries with Solar plants. Why C10? Answer is simple, if it was C20 and 150Ah battery @12V, then it would provide 7.5A current for 20 hours, when fully charged and a C10 capacity battery would provide 15A current for 10 hours while discharging.

Now, we are shifting to a new battery technology i.e. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries to work with Solar power plants and provide a reliable solution to the customer to run heavy appliances even for a longer period. Let us know more about our solution. There are two types of Lithium batteries-

The formula of LiFePO4 battery. Source: Wikipedia
  1. High Power Lithium batteries- If we need to draw more current from our battery pack. For E.g. we are using a 3KW Solar power plant designed @48V DC and we are running an Air conditioner on it. The batteries here must be High Power Lithium batteries. Like 200Ah @48V. The backup of such battery pack is less but constant current supply is more.
  2. High Energy Lithium Battery- If we need to draw constant power at a predefined voltage and our load is also not heavy, we need High Energy Lithium Battery in that case. For E.g. we want to run all the lighting at home with 2 or 3 fans, we need high energy batteries there. The backup time is more and lesser amount of current is drawn from the battery to run the load while discharging.
